HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. HEPA air filters will remove 99.97% of particulates measuring 0.3 microns or larger. Since HEPA air filters are so effective at removing a variety of particulates from the air, including virus-carrying particles, it comes as no surprise that people are looking into purchasing HEPA filters for their home. However, there are many reasons why you should not be using a HEPA air filter in your home.
Here are just a few reasons why you should not use a HEPA air filter in your home:
- HEPA air filters can restrict airflow
- HEPA air filters can cause problems for your HVAC system
- HEPA air filters are more costly
- HEPA air filters are typically thicker than the standard pleated air filter
The only time it is okay to use a HEPA air filter in your home is if your system is either compatible or requires a HEPA air filter. HEPA filters are typically more common for commercial applications, medical facilities, and in high-tech manufacturing facilities. It is very uncommon and not recommended for HEPA filters to be used for residential applications.
Usually the only time you would need a HEPA air filter in your home is if your home was built to accommodate HEPA filter use or if your HVAC system has been modified to support the installation of a true HEPA system, which is very costly.
Don’t worry— there’s hope! You can still get highly effective filtration and HEPA technology in your home without having to purchase costly HEPA filters and risk ruining your HVAC system.
