Not only is autumn the perfect time to change your air filters, but it is also a great time to change your water filters too! Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you are changing your water filtration system, reverse osmosis systems, water pitcher filters and/or refrigerator filters.

It’s important to change your water filters regularly. Water filters help remove the contaminants that are commonly found in tap water, the longer you put off changing the more of a chance you will have of foul-tasting water with traces of contaminants.

It’s always a good idea to wash your water containers regularly. You can have the best water treatment system in the world, but if you are putting clean water into a dirty container, it may no longer be safe to drink. Make sure that you are properly and regularly cleaning your water containers, from household pitchers to water bottles.

Here’s a simple way to clean your containers and reusable water bottles:

  1. Mix a few drops of dish detergent into the clean water and pour it into the storage container.
  2.  Agitate the liquid and scrub the inside with a nonabrasive scrub brush or a clean dish rag, then rinse the container thoroughly.

If you have a water softener, don’t forget to maintain it! Typical water softeners use resin beads to capture hardness ions, and periodically use salt to cleanse the beads and prepare the unit to remove more hardness ions. If you have a water softening system, be sure to check salt levels at least once a month. How do you check the salt level? Simply lift the tank lid and look inside; if the tank is less than half full, it needs more salt. When in doubt always consult a professional.

We hope that this information has been helpful and will have you going into the fall season with confidence!
