How Proper HVAC Maintenance Can Help You Save BIG This Fall

HVAC maintenance

There’s no such thing as too much savings, right? The opposite, however, too much spending — is something that anyone would dread. With Thanksgiving and Black Friday coming up, an unforeseen expense such as an HVAC repair would be unfortunate. Thankfully, there are a few ways you can keep up HVAC maintenance to avoid such an event.

HVAC Maintenance Tip 1: Clean the Dust from Around the Unit

Cleaning your HVAC can seem like a daunting task, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the workings of it. We’d recommend hiring a professional for the intricate parts of the system. But there are some things that you can handle to keep costs low.

Locate your unit outside and remove leaves and other debris. Doing so makes sure that your system has a clean area to operate. It might seem like a simple action, but it can go a long way toward controlling the amount of dirt that could enter your HVAC.

To provide an extra layer of protection, cover the system with an HVAC Condenser Wrap when the weather gets cooler.

HVAC Maintenance Tip 2: Be Aware of Your Home’s Temperature

This is one factor that is commonly overlooked when it comes to maintaining your HVAC system. Believe it or not, casually allowing your unit to run heat can cause harm over time. Think about it. Your system has just gotten a ton of use trying to keep you cool over the summer. Now you’re asking it to go to the opposite end of the spectrum and keep you warm. The shock and stress of going from one extreme to the other could break down an already worn unit.

It’s recommended that you ease the system into fall and winter usage by paying attention to the temperature. A comfortable temperature for your HVAC to operate during the fall should be around 75 degrees. Utilize a programmable thermostat to auto-adjust the temperature. When it warms up during the day, your HVAC can conserve itself.

During the night, perhaps investigate using a humidifier to assist your system. It will keep dust levels down and the increased humidity will ease up some of the work your HVAC has to do. A humidifier will be an investment, but in addition to regulating your temperature, it will provide major savings.

HVAC Maintenance Tip 3: Replace the Batteries in Your Thermostat

If your thermostat is battery-operated, making sure it’s supercharged with fresh batteries can go a long way towards saving you money. Here’s why. A thermostat that has a low or completely drained battery will not be able to communicate effectively with your HVAC unit. This will lead to your system overloading itself, causing it to waste energy.

What this does is potentially annoy you in multiple ways, including taxing your pockets and your comfort. To avoid these negatives and conserve your system’s energy, it’s a good idea to check your thermostat’s batteries annually.

Best Tip: Consistently Replace Your Furnace Filters

The easiest thing you can do for your HVAC system to save big could also be the most difficult! All it requires is that you take a fresh furnace filter and replace the old one at least every one to three months. If neglected, you could be putting yourself and your HVAC system in danger.
A filter’s purpose is to catch airborne contaminants. It also protects your HVAC, allowing it to operate efficiently. Eventually, your filter will experience wear and tear. A worn filter will allow contaminants to gain access to your HVAC.

The HVAC will become littered with dirt, dust, pollen, pet dander, and more. Soon, this blockage will cause your unit to work even harder to push air throughout your home. This consumes more energy, affecting the environment and your pockets. If left unchecked, your system will crash requiring repair that could cost you thousands!

But the easiest way to protect your wallet and save BIG this fall is to consistently change your furnace filters.
