How to Save Money This New Year

By January 7, 2019 No Comments

Are you constantly looking for ways to save money? Isn’t everyone? In honor of #CutYourEnergyCosts day, which falls on the 10th of January, we thought we’d put together some money saving tips that homeowners can do to save money this new year:

  • Check your insulation. Inspect the insulation in your attic.
There should be at least six inches (or more in the northern part of the US) of insulation in your attic. (Source: simpledollar.com) If your insulation is looking a little sparse, you should consider installing more insulation for your home. Adequate insulation can reduce maintenance and energy costs, so this is something you don’t want to overlook. Having an adequate amount of insulation in your attic will also help you extend the life of your heating/cooling system.
  • Check for leaks. Make sure to check every faucet, toilet and under-sink plumbing for leaks. If you find a leak, fix it immediately. The more it leaks, the more money you waste. A good time to check for leaks is when you are installing your water filter. Leaks can also cause an unpleasant occurrence of mold in your home that can cause expensive repairs or severe health problems if it goes unnoticed.
  • Replace your air/furnace filters regularly. An old filter has a negative impact on air flow and reduces the efficiency of your air conditioning unit. It also filters poorly meaning that you have a low quality of air circulating throughout your home.

  • Replace Your Water Filters: Replacing refrigerator filters, under sink filters, whole home filters, etc., is critical to keeping a steady flow of clean water through your new home. The best time to buy your water filter is RIGHT NOW, the longer you wait, the more likely it could slip your mind. The most common water filter used today is the refrigerator water filter. This without a doubt will need to be replaced every 6 months.
