Tips for Creating a Happier, Healthier Life and Home

By May 29, 2018November 29th, 2020No Comments

Are you always looking for ways to stay healthy? Isn’t everybody? We’ve put together some tips to help you create a happier, healthier life and home.

For your Home:

Save on Electricity Invest in compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). CFLs can save three-quarters of the electricity used by incandescent bulbs, and the cost to light your home with CFLs is less than one-third of the cost lighting your home with incandescent bulbs. CFLs do cost more, by they last a lot longer and use way less energy.

Save Water Upgrade to more efficient fixtures. Doing this will reduce both your water bill and energy bill, and you could possibly receive rebates and incentives to make the switch, too. Ultra-low-flow fixtures that are on the market conserve more water than the previous generation — without compromising performance. Look for EPA WaterSense-labeled products when you’re shopping for toilets, showerheads, and faucets.

Ensure Your Drinking Water is Safe Knowing your home’s water quality by calling your local municipality for water-test results can be more beneficial than you think. If necessary, rid your drinking water of harmful pollutants, such as asbestos and radium, by installing a water-filtration system like this one.

Add an Air Purifier Did you know that indoor air pollution can be up to five times higher than outdoor air pollution, according to the Environmental Protection Agency? Consider investing in an air purifier like this one to control odors, chemical vapors, and pollutants in your home.

Freshen Up Your Air with Fans Using exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathroom when cooking and bathing is more beneficial than you think. A range hood helps keep kitchen air clean by expelling pollutants, such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide, generated by a gas stove. Bathroom exhaust fans provide added comfort and reduce condensation that can lead to mold growth.

Install Carbon Monoxide Detectors Install carbon monoxide detectors, which notify you of the deadly, odorless gas especially if your home has a fireplace. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends installing detectors near sleeping areas.

Ventilation is Key New homes are often sealed so tightly that there are no leaks to supply fresh air. But according to Mark LaLiberte, a building consultant with Building Knowledge, Inc., in Minneapolis, says homes should include a ventilation system to exhaust stale air and bring in fresh.

Control Dust Conquer dust with these easy tips:

— Display hard-to-clean collectibles behind glass doors.

— Put allergy-control covers on mattresses and pillows, and be sure to wash bedding weekly in hot water and dry on high heat.

— After a home remodeling project is complete, hire a licensed company to clean your home’s duct system.

— Choose easy-to-clean window treatments, flat-weave cotton and linen fabrics are smart selections. Avoid heavily textured draperies and blinds, which can collect dust.

Smart Cleaning Battle bacteria on kitchen surfaces by sanitizing sponges. Toss them into the microwave or dishwasher. Make sure countertops and cutting boards are nonporous and clean them regularly. Also, look for cleaning products that are made from plant sources rather than petroleum and that are free of chemicals that can irritate (such as chlorine) or pollute (such as phosphates).

For yourself:

Food Prep Food prepping can save you so much time during the week. Chop veggies and store them in the fridge, pre-cook protein, and grains, and make a large portion of dressing and sauces to use all week.

Smoothie Bags Smoothies are a great way to keep yourself full. To cut down on time in the morning, add berries, spinach, protein powder, and other non-liquid fixings into a Ziploc bag so when you’re ready to puree, all you have to do is dump the ingredients in the blender.

Take a Walk Majority of jobs nowadays require sitting at a desk for the majority of the day. And then when you add sitting down for dinner and driving or taking the train to work, and that means you’re sitting for 70% of an average workday. Find ways to keep moving by sneaking in some exercise by running errands on foot, taking the stairs, parking farther away from your destination, or getting off the subway or train stop before you actually need to.

Destress Stress negatively impact your health—and addressing it is something most people neglect. Instead of turning to unhealthy outlets, try some stress relieving exercises like breathing and brewing yourself a cup of tea. Here are some other things that can help reduce stress: smelling lavender, doing a few quick stretches, or taking a stroll around the block.

Drink More Water It is recommended that you drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Drinking plenty of was can help keep you full, energized, and extra focused. Remind yourself to drink up by keeping a water bottle at your desk or setting reminders on your phone.

Say no to Screen Time For most of us when we’re not looking a computer screen, we’re looking at our phone or a TV screen. At work, put your phone in your desk or turn off pop-up notifications to help you stay focused. At home, limit your time on tech, your eyes will thank you.

Go for goals Setting goals are a great way to grow. Personally, or professionally, set goals that you can accomplish and work your way up. If you want to lose weight start small and work your way up. Want a promotion at work? Take on one project at a time instead of several new responsibilities.

Productivity is Key Nowadays it’s easy to get sidetracked. If social media is a time-suck for you, start limiting your time on them. If you enjoy socializing a little too much, book a conference room or head to a coffee shop when you need to get stuff done. It’s as simple as identifying trouble areas and try to find a solution. And if you need a little help, don’t be afraid to ask. Get friends, family members or even coworkers to keep you accountable.

Sleep Getting enough sleep at night will do wonders for your health. Sleep impacts your energy levels, your ability to make good decisions and to put your best face forward.
